Finnish Joinery

Grades

Unsorted

This is the best quality joinery timber where the lower grades have been removed, or sorted. Unsorted joinery is used where the visible finish is important, such as doors, windows or stairs. Unsorted is also used for skirting’s, architraves and other internal mouldings when a high quality finish is required. Unsorted joinery has a low knot content, straight grain and a smooth finish.

V (5ths)

This is the next grade, a more multi-purpose grade which has a huge variety of uses. The bulk of PSE and mouldings are machined from this grade.

This grade is typically used for cladding, flooring, skirting, architraves, dado rails as well as many other uses.

This grade maintains the smooth finish of unsorted but the grain may not always be straight.

Sawfalling

Sawfalling sits in-between V (5ths) and VI (6ths) as a grade.

This grade is a mixture of all timber grades, taken from the tree ‘as the saw falls’

VI (6ths)

The lowest grade which has larger knots and more defects. This grade can be used for packaging materials and disposable pallets as well as some cladding and furniture manufacturing where defects can add to the feature of the end product.

This grade has a higher knot content than other grades.
