Story

1812

William Price

The origins of the company can be traced back to 1812 when Napoleon was successfully blockading the Swedish ports to deny Britain access for masts and spars for their navy. The British Admiralty sent Mr. William Price overseas to Canada to investigate if the timber could be sourced from there. Mr. Price succeeded in his assignment and stayed in Canada to build up a very substantial timber business which he passed on to his sons.

1860

One of the sons, Mr. Edward Price was sent back to England in the 1860s to establish a UK office and in 1869 formed a timber agency partnership with Mr. John Pierce of Liverpool. The partnership expanded considerably in the next half century, forming relationships with most of the main companies in wood producing countries.

1905

Price & Pierce floated on the London Stock Exchange as a Public Limited Company in 1905.

1965

Logs

Price & Pierce employed over 2000 staff and had offices in over 10 countries. By this time Price & Pierce had expanded its business to cover products including Pulp, Shipping, Insurance, and even a travel business.

2000

A management buyout, which included all the timber business took place in 2000.

2011

Price & Pierce acquired Eric Matthews LTD, a long established panel products agent and distributor.

2019

International Forest Products (IFP), a subsidiary of the Kraft Paper Group, acquired the total shareholding of Price and Pierce Forest Products Ltd.

Our responsibilities

Price & Pierce Forest Products Ltd sources timber and other forest products from most of the world’s forested regions.

We recognise our environmental responsibilities in every country and region where we source or sell timber or other forest products, and we are committed to responsible purchasing. We have established a due diligence system to ensure that certified products do not include raw material from controversial sources such as:

  • Threatened and endangered species classified by CITES
  • Timber that has been illegally harvested
  • Areas where traditional or civil rights have been violated
  • Timber from forests in which high conservation values are threatened by management activities
  • Timber from genetically modified trees

We are a member of the Timber Trade Federation and have signed up to their Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP). We are also Chain of Custody certified for FSC® and PEFC, independently audited processes which allow us to maintain accurate chain of custody records for timber and timber products from certified forest areas.
